Over 200 to Participate in Second Coach O Invitational
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Over 200 young athletes are scheduled to compete in the second annual Coach O AAU Indoor Track & Field Invitational in Bloomington, Ill., on Sunday, Jan. 18. The meet, co-hosted by the Titan Track Club, was renamed in honor of Coach O in 2008, but has drawn hundreds of athletes and spectators to Bloomington for many years.
“I have worked with Coach O for several years,” Marchan Adkins, Meet Director and head of the Titan Track Club, said. “So I thought it would be a good idea to honor him by re-designating the meet as the Coach O Indoor Invitational and he picked up some of the sponsorship.”
The event, which drew nearly 340 participants last year, will once again take place at the Shirk Athletic Complex on the Illinois Wesleyan University campus in Bloomington. The facility has an eight-lane straightaway and six lanes around the oval and hosted the 2000 and 2005 NCAA Division III Indoor National Track & Field Championships.
Adkins has already received entries from Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
“The experience they (the athletes) have at this meet is going to be much different than other indoor meets that are offered because of the quality of the venue and the efficiency with which we run the event,” Adkins said.
Additionally, some of the nation’s greatest pole vaulting youth will be there. Adkins estimates more than 30 vaulters are scheduled to compete this year.
“Some of the greatest pole vaulters in the country will be participating,” he said. “Every year, we have 30 or more pole vaulters at this event and I think we already have 31 or 32 registered for this year’s meet. We draw some of the best.”
